Starving Dog

Remember, the dog that peacefully lay under your deck bed, enjoying your company on the beach, is an individual with his own little character. Most of these dogs now face starvation and hardship in the monsoon.

Aims and Objectives:

To rid Goa and India of all unnecessary suffering endured by countless beach dogs and cats. Our priority is to sterilize all dogs, so that eventually the "stray dog" situation is eliminated humanely, and not by "culling" as is done in some other parts of the world. In the meantime, we have to feed these dogs.

NGO:

We are in the process of applying for a NGO status

How we came to be:

A group of concerned friends in North Goa quickly founded this organization in May 2009, after we found animals on the beach we love, starving and malnourished. Now, all the restaurant owners have pulled down their shacks from May to October, and gone, each of them saying "these are not my dogs". Most tourists have also gone. We must not forget, these dogs have befriended and protected hundreds of tourists and shack owners, and are excellent in controlling the rat population on the beach.

Practical Action:

We have organized, and paid for a huge pot of dal, rice, soya chunks to be cooked every second day.. This pilau is carried down to the beach, usually in a wind and rainstorm, to each dog pack. The packs are fed separately. We have also so far, sterilized 12 dogs and 8 cats, with the help of Animal Recue of Goa. Medical attention is also given by us, with Dr. Mariella Afonso of Mapusa, volunteering her precious time to give our pooches their annual rabies and flu jabs. We also have a small rehoming project for fostered puppies and kittens.
What has really surprised us is that the dogs miss human affection and physical contact, as much as they miss a guaranteed meal. So "cuddling" is also part of our duty!
